Grant Competition Announcement

Prospera is pleased to announce that $18,000 will go directly to helping women business owners in Montana. Grant funding can be used for anything that will enhance economic independence for women, job creation, or take the business to the next level of success.

We are most interested in projects that directly improve the ability of women business owners to become more economically successful. Grant applicants should share a brief compelling story about how they will use or leverage grant funds to grow or strengthen their business and how it will impact their local community.

Important Dates:

  • Applications open January 1, 2024
  • Applications close March 8, 2024, at noon MST
  • Finalists for the pitch contest will be notified by March 29, 2024
  • Live Zoom Pitch Contest will be held on April 17, 2024, from 4:30-6:15 pm MST

Grant Funding:
Applicants will apply for one of three categories to fund ONE project. This is a two-phase process; Phase 1 is the application due no later than March 8, 2024, at noon MST and Phase 2 is a live pitch contest held on Zoom on April 17, 2024, from 4:30-6:15 pm. Grant recipients will be announced live on Zoom after the pitch contest.

The applicants will be divided into Rural, Urban, and Statewide groups. If your business is registered in a town with a population of fewer than 10,000, you qualify for the Rural grants. Businesses registered in towns with more than 10,000 people qualify for the Urban grants. The Statewide grant applies to recipients of rural and urban areas. Both Rural and Urban have a $5,000 grant while the Statewide grant is $8,000.

This is a reimbursement grant, the winners in each category will be reimbursed within 30 business days of submitting receipts.

Requirements to Apply:

  • This is a statewide opportunity for Montana women-owned businesses only, with ownership of 51% or more.
  • Grant applicants must be registered with the MT Secretary of State and be a revenue-generating business for at least 12 months.
  • This opportunity is open only to for-profits.
  • Applicants do not need to be Prospera members.
  • Grant funding cannot be used for a business in the cannabis industry.
  • Applicants can apply for up to $5,000 or $8,000 to be used for equipment, marketing, signage, staffing, trailers, leasehold improvements, anything that will take your business to the next level – please only apply for exactly how much you need.
  • For example, if your project will cost $6,200, you can apply for $6,200 in the $8,000 applicant pool, but you will only get reimbursed the $6,200. If your project costs $6,200 and you apply in the $5,000 pool you will only be reimbursed $5,000.
  • Please do not submit a grant for training—the Department of Labor has an excellent grant called the Incumbent Worker Training Grant that can help you:
  • If grant funds will leverage other fund sources, the applicant must show proof that those funds are confirmed. If you are applying for funds to hire a new employee, please show proof that your business has the cash flow to support this new position beyond the grant period and a job description with wage information.
  • Recipients of the Prospera Impact grant from the past five years are ineligible to receive grant funding.
  • This is a reimbursement grant. The recipient must submit receipts for spending the money before Sept 1.
  • The grant funds cannot be used for purchases before the grant award date.
  • Your application will be submitted as a single PDF. If you need help converting your documents into PDF, please research applications that can create PDF files for you. We cannot assist with converting your files into PDF. Here is a generic Google Search to assist you.

There are three different grants available; you can only apply for one grant per business. More than one application per business automatically disqualifies all applications for that business.

The three grants available:

For this grant, “urban” is defined as any town with a population of more than 10,000 residents according to the 2021 US Census Bureau. “Rural” is defined as any town with less than 10,000 residents, according to the 2021 US Census Bureau. You can check your town’s population at this link.

For application submission instructions and information on how applications are scored, you can read the document here.

Applications will close on March 8, 2024, at NOON MST.
