Firebreak Management

Inspired by a deep passion for wildfire management and a desire to balance her personal and professional life, Jessica Braun founded Firebreak Management. After years on the fire line with the Montana Conservation Corps (MCC) and the US Forest Service, she combined her firsthand experience with her dedication to wildfire prevention to create a business that addresses the urgent need for fuel reduction and homeowner education.

While her career began in the woods as a chainsaw-wielding MCC member, she soon transitioned to various roles within the Forest Service, including positions on wildland fire engines, hand crews, and eventually as part of a prestigious hotshot crew. These experiences provided Braun with unparalleled insight into the challenges and risks of wildland firefighting. However, the demands of the fireline made her seek a balance that allowed her to stay closer to home while remaining connected to her passion. This drive led to the founding of Firebreak Management, where she now focuses on reducing fire risks around homes and communities and educating others on the importance of wildfire mitigation.

Prospera and the Montana Women's Business Center (MTWBC) became instrumental in turning her vision into a thriving business. Through one-on-one advising, extensive training, and invaluable networking opportunities, Braun found not only practical guidance but also a community of peers facing similar challenges. “Every version of me was welcome with open arms,” she said, reflecting on how Prospera supported her through moments of triumph and hardship alike. “I came through the front doors early to chat, running late to group courses, being defeated by equipment companies or the bank, and celebrating huge victories.”

Firebreak Management has benefited immensely from the resources provided by Prospera. Whether it was specific business coaching or emotional support, the organization helped Braun navigate the complexities of growing her business, particularly as a woman in a male-dominated field. “There is absolutely no way I would be where I am without the advising, peer connections, education, and emotional support provided by Prospera and the Women’s Business Center,” she emphasized.

The training and networking opportunities offered by Prospera have been some of the most rewarding aspects of her journey. These resources have not only contributed to her business’s success but also to her personal growth as a business owner. “Support pours out of you guys through the various coaching sessions, networking events, training, friendship, and community—it’s an entire support system,” she shared enthusiastically.

Today, Firebreak Management stands as a testament to her resilience, passion, and the power of community-driven support. By focusing on wildfire mitigation and homeowner education, Braun is not only protecting homes but also fostering a deeper understanding of the vital role we all play in fire prevention. Her story serves as an inspiration for anyone seeking to turn their passion into a purposeful and impactful business.
